BEST VIETNAMESE: TAMARINE RESTAURANT 546
University Ave., Palo Alto (650) 325-8500 http://www.tamarinerestaurant.com/
Why They Won: Where to start? Everything
about this place is first class. The interior décor was
styled by the Engstrom Design Group, one of the
country’s top restaurant design firms. Their inventive
cocktails are worth the visit alone (be sure to try the
Mandarin Drop, consisting of Mandarin vodka, orange
Curacao, lemon and orange rind). And the food? As much
as you might want to horde your savory plate of chili
prawns, the family-style servings at Tamarine encourages
a communal eating experience. House Specialty:
Red Lantern Duck: A five-spice breast seared and
served with edamame and spinach coated with a
pomegranate glaze. Acceptance Speech: “There
are so many wonderful Asian cuisine restaurants in the
South Bay that we’re absolutely delighted to be awarded
such an honor.” –Anne Le, Owner Bet You Didn’t
Know: Tamarine is also a working art gallery,
featuring works from Vietnamese artists. Profits from
their semi-annual auctions are donated to VN Help, an
organization dedicated to assisting impoverished
Vietnamese children and families. Runner Up:
Lombok Restaurant, 546 University Ave., Palo Alto (650)
325-8500 http://www.lombokrestaurant.com/
BEST JAPANESE: KYOTO
PALACE 1875 S. Bascom Ave. #2500,
Campbell (408) 377-6456 http://www.kyotopalace.com/
Why They Won: We suspect that Kyoto Palace
knew they were going to win this category all along.
Okay, we don’t really have any proof, but consider this:
Every time you walk into Kyoto Palace, everyone is
smiling, like it’s a big party and you’re invited. Very
suspicious. Or how about the fact that they offer Teppan
dining (think Benihana performance cooking) on one side
of the room and regular dining on the other? It’s like
they were intentionally trying to please
everyone, just so that they would vote for them.
Somebody call Michael Moore! In the meantime, check out
your fellow readers’ pick for Best Japanese.
House Specialty: Wednesday night Sake Bombs
and Karaoke Acceptance Speech: “We’re
excited. I have to give a lot of credit to our staff.
They’ve done a tremendous job of building our client
base.” –Dale Yoshihara, General Manager Bet You
Didn’t Know: The bullet train that connects Kyoto
and Tokyo runs at speeds of 250 mph. Runner Up:
Akane Japanese Restaurant, 250 Third St., Los Altos
(650) 941-8150
BEST SUSHI: BLOWFISH
SUSHI 355 Santana Row, San Jose (408)
345-3848 http://www.blowfishsushi.com/
Why They Won: Come for the world-class sushi,
stay for the rare selection of rice wines. Be sure to
try their Peach Nympho sake cocktail, which blends lush
peach juice with the ever-intoxicating sweetness of Sho
Chiku Bai nigori sake. Oh, and if you want to get in
good with the sushi chefs (and believe us, you do), buy
them a beer before you’ve finished ordering. Why? Just
trust us on this one. Your stomach will thank you for it
later. House Specialty: The Ego Roll
($13.50): toro, eringi mushroom, hotate and tobiko
cavier Acceptance Speech: “We want to thank
the readers of The Wave and I want to thank my amazing,
hardworking staff and most of all, I want to thank all
the fish who gave themselves to the greater cause of our
exquisite dining experience.” –Jennifer Embleton,
Regional Manager Bet You Didn’t Know:
Blowfish is one of the riskiest varieties of sushi
you can eat. Blowfish ovaries occasionally, though
rarely, contain a toxic alkaloid called tetrodotoxin,
and there’s no known cure for it. Blowfish is only
served at Blowfish Sushi when the fishermen accidentally
catch it; and that typically only happens in December.
Runner Up: Fuki Sushi, 4119 El Camino Real,
Palo Alto (650) 494-9383 http://www.fukisushi.com/
BEST FINE DINING: MANRESA RESTAURANT 320
Village Lane, Los Gatos (408) 354-4330 http://www.manresarestaurant.com/
Why They Won: Why did Chef David Kinch’s
French cuisine take the Fine Dining prize? The obvious
answer is “They got the most votes,” but we think a more
telling indicator would be the comment one enthusiastic
voter scrawled in giant red letters on their ballot:
“THE BEST $100 I EVER SPENT ON MY STOMACH!” What the
writer lacks in eloquence, he or she more than makes up
for in accuracy. The $94 Chef’s tasting menu at Manresa
is a multi-course adventure in flavor (as are the
cheaper, three, four and five-course prix fixe options).
Seasonal menus make recommending a particular dish
difficult, but trust us: The voters were right.
House Specialty: For all the taste without
the cost, try Manresa’s patio menu of gourmet tapas.
Acceptance Speech: “What a surprise.” –David
Kinch, Chef Bet You Didn’t Know: The
restaurant’s name comes from a medieval town in the
Catalonia region of northern Spain that’s famous for its
Gothic basilica and monastery. Runner Up: The
Basin, 14572 Big Basin Way, Saratoga (408) 867-1906
http://www.thebasin.com/
BEST NEW RESTAURANT: ROSIE MCCANN’S 355
Santana Row, #1060, San Jose (408) 247-1706 http://www.rosiemccanns.com/
Why They Won: Santana Row is so popular that
we sort-of expected one of their many new eateries to
win in this category. Indeed, the winner is Rosie
McCann’s, Santana Row’s version of the Santa Cruz pub of
the same name. But unlike their south of the summit
location, this Rosie’s is noticeably more upscale in
décor and clientele, and focuses less on the Boddingtons
on tap and more on the menu of Irish favorites, like the
lamb stew or the corned beef and cabbage plate.
House Specialty: Traditional Shepherd’s Pie,
served with Guinness gravy Acceptance Speech:
“You don’t know how happy we are to win. It can be
tough for new restaurants to get off the ground and
we’re just thrilled to be recognized by your readers.”
–Michael Tosney, General Manager Bet You Didn’t
Know: Rosie McCann is the name of an Irish girl in
the song “Star of the Country Down.” Runner Up:
Paragon, 211 S. First St. in the Hotel Montgomery,
San Jose (408) 282-8888 http://www.paragonrestaurant.com/
BEST CUBAN*: HABANA
CUBA 238 Race St., San Jose (408)
998-2822 http://www.998cuba.com/ Why
They Won: We wouldn’t be surprised if Fidel Castro
sent secret agents to spy on Habana Cuba’s kitchen.
Surely the dictator is interested in discovering how
some of his island-fortress’ most exotic flavors have
made it to the mainland intact. Consider the Rabo
Encendido (“Flaming Tail”), an Oxtail that has been
braised in red wine and a spicy tomato sauce and is
served with sweet plantains. In Havana, this recipe is a
closely guarded secret of the state. In San Jose, it’s
$17 and one of many flavorful dishes that will surprise
and delight foodies who’ve grown bored with traditional
Mexican dishes. House Specialty: Lechon, a
slow-roasted pork dish Acceptance Speech: “We
work very hard at what we do. It means a lot that your
readers appreciate our business.” –Jennifer Cannella,
Owner Bet You Didn’t Know: The star on the
Cuban flag represents “absolute freedom of the people.”
Ah, the irony. Runner Up: La Bodeguita del
Medio, 463 S. California Ave., Palo Alto (650) 326-7762
http://www.labodeguita.com/
BEST STEAKHOUSE: FORBES MILL STEAKHOUSE
206 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos (408) 395-6434
http://www.forbesmillsteakhouse.com/
Why They Won: For the most succulent steak in
the world, you gotta go to Forbes Mill. That’s no
exaggeration. Forbes uses only Wagyu beef, which is a
cow that has been fed nothing but corn and beer its
entire life – a life in an air-conditioned condo under
the care of a full-time bovine masseuse. If you think
this type of pampering just makes for a good story and
more expensive prices – you’re wrong. The all-beer diet
can be tasted in these perfectly marbled chops, and
you’ll be hard pressed to find a more tender steak
anywhere. House Specialty: Prime steak;
Forbes Mill is one of the few restaurants in America
that serves the Kobe brand beef. Acceptance
Speech: “Well, it’s not news to us. Being the best
is what we strive for. We hope we can continue to be
that for our customers.” –Mac Maki, General Manager
Bet You Didn’t Know: Millionaire athlete Kobe
Bryant was named after Kobe beef. Billionaire investor
Steve Forbes was not named after Forbes Mill.
Runner Up: Sundance The Steakhouse, 1921 El
Camino Real, Palo Alto (650) 321-6798 http://www.sundancethesteakhouse.com/
BEST AMERICAN: BIRK’S
RESTAURANT 3955 Freedom Circle, Santa
Clara (408) 980-6400 http://www.birksrestaurant.com/
Why They Won: Too often, “American Food” is
used as shorthand for “burger and sandwich joint.” But
South Bay diners like their American a little more
refined, which is why the upscale chop shop, Birk’s,
garnered the most votes in this category. It doesn’t
matter if you prefer a porterhouse, filet mignon,
ribeye, ribchop or classic dry aged New York cut, your
steak is in expert hands at this South Bay institution.
Want proof? Their menu doesn’t list “Entrees.” Instead
it merely lists “Classics.” That just about says it all.
House Specialty: Servers who will gladly
accept your order for the vegetarian herbed couscous
without laughing in your face. Acceptance
Speech: “I need to mention our wine buyer Jason
Zafiropoulo. He’s done an amazing job with our wine
list. Our mantra is to always exceed our customers’
expectations. We’re known as where the movers and
shakers dine. A lot of deals of deals are made at our
tables. We’re proud to win this award and we want our
customers to know we’re not going to rest on our
laurels.” –Maurice Dissels, Executive Chef Bet
You Didn’t Know: The difference between a T-bone
steak and a porterhouse is a matter of width. If the
tenderloin portion of the cut is greater than 1¼ inches,
it’s a porterhouse. Runner Up: A.P. Stumps,
163 W. Santa Clara St., San Jose (408) 292-9928 http://www.apstumps.com/
BEST BBQ: HENRY’S
HI-LIFE 301 W. Saint John St., San
Jose (408) 295-5414 http://www.henryshilife.com/
Why They Won: Silicon Valley is a hotbed of
good barbecue, so it was no surprise that the voting in
this category did not determine a winner until the final
day. But when the smoke cleared, only one smokehouse
stood at the top: The 60-year-old classic, Henry’s
Hi-Life. Was it their ceaseless devotion to the art of
baby back ribs that tipped the tally in their favor? Was
it the 24-ounce porterhouse that weighed on the minds of
voters? Or was it the 15 beers on tap that flowed the
extra votes needed to capture the crown? Find out next
year when we tell you. House Specialty:
During football season, Henry’s opens at 8:30am to
serve their classic steak and eggs breakfast to a
platoon of gridiron faithful. Acceptance Speech:
“We’d like to thank all of our faithful regulars
that have kept us in business.” –Richard Aranda, Manager
Bet You Didn’t Know: The original Henry’s
Hi-Life had to be moved to make room for Highway 280.
The current Henry’s has been in place since the late
1960s. Runner Up: Rib Crib Barbecue, 19930
Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino (650) 948-3349 http://www.ribcrib.com/
BEST ROMANTIC: LA
FORET 21747 Bertram Rd., San Jose
(408) 997-3458 www.world2do.com/laforet Why
They Won: Nothing says romance like a quaint, 19th
century home that’s been renovated to accommodate
couples looking to share some serious one-on-one time
with great food and wine. Perched by a slow running
creek amid plush countryside scenery, La Foret is often
cited as being one of the Top 50 French restaurants in
the country. House Specialty: Their
delectable smoked salmon with capers, onions and
vinaigrette Acceptance Speech: “This is very
nice. Wonderful. We’ve been getting a lot of awards from
other magazines lately.” –John Davoudi, Owner Bet
You Didn’t Know: The La Foret house was originally
built in 1848 by a former Mexican Army officer who
became wealthy upon discovering quicksilver in the
nearby hills. Runner Up: Sent Sovi, 14583 Big
Basin Way, Saratoga (408) 867-3110 http://www.sentsovi.com/
BEST DESSERT: DOLCE
SPAZIO DESSERT CAFE 221 N. Santa Cruz
Ave., Los Gatos (408) 395-1335 Why They Won:
1982 was a banner year for prognostication in Los
Gatos. Not only did Los Gatos Roasting Company open that
year, beating the gourmet coffee fad by a decade, but
Dolce Spazio opened as well, introducing gelato to a
community who thought ice cream began and ended with 31
Flavors. Since then, Dolce Spazio has continued wowing
patrons with their ultra-creamy, airless Italian ice
creams (over 60 flavors are available). On a hot day,
long lines for both ice cream and a coveted seat on the
patio are in full effect, and we’re guessing that many
voters filled out their ballots while waiting in queue
for their waffle cone. House Specialty: Their
world-famous gelato Acceptance Speech:
“Thanks to all the Dolce Spazio fanatics who voted
for us.” –Mike Orlando, Owner Bet You Didn’t
Know: According to the International Ice Cream
Association (yes, really), Vanilla is overwhelmingly the
most popular favorite of ice cream. Runner Up:
Prolific Oven, 550 Waverley St., Palo Alto (650)
326-8485, 3938 Rivermark Plaza, Santa Clara (408)
986-8388, 18832 Cox Ave., Saratoga (408) 378-9880 http://www.prolific-oven.com/
BEST FRENCH: EMILE’S
RESTAURANT 545 S. Second St., San Jose
(408) 289-1960 http://www.emiles.com/ Why
They Won: Be honest: Have you ever eaten at a bad
French restaurant? The French take food so seriously
that even the worst bistro is still better than the best
diner. So what made Emile’s stand out as the best of the
best? We think it was Emile himself, or rather, the
culinary influences that this Swiss-born chef brings to
the kitchen. His entrees may look French, but they are
all tinged with hints of Italian, Spanish and (of
course) Swiss cooking. Emile will also personally match
your meal with the perfect wine; his list includes over
300 labels, from the inexpensive to the
mortgage-your-house range. House Specialty:
The soufflé Acceptance Speech: “I think
the word is spreading about us. Zagat just awarded us
the best French restaurant in the San Francisco Bay
Area. I understand there are a lot of followers of my
type of cuisine. Your readers obviously feel the same
way. I guess we should just keep doing what we do best,
and that’s classic French cuisine with a Swiss accent.”
–Emile Mooser, Owner Bet You Didn’t Know:
French fries are really from Belgium, not France.
What’s that? You already knew that? Well, fine, Mr.
SmartyPants, then what is the national flower of France?
Ah, we’re not so smart now, are we? Runner Up:
Le Papillon, 410 Saratoga Ave., San Jose (408)

BEST SEAFOOD: MCCORMICK AND SCHMICK’S
170 S. Market St., San Jose (408) 283-7200 http://www.mccormickandschmicks.com/
Why They Won: There’s a reason why grocery
store sushi usually sucks. If you want delicious fish,
it simply has to be fresh. The folks at McCormick and
Schmick’s understand this, and they make serving fresh
seafood (more than 30 different varieties) their main
priority. They print new menus daily.
House Specialty: Depends what day you show
up. Acceptance Speech: “I’d like to thank our
customers who are loyal to us and continue to dine with
us. Our mission was to come into this market and make a
positive impact, and I like to think we’ve made that
impact and will continue to move forward in the future.”

BEST GREEK/MEDITERRANEAN: DISH DASH 190 S. Murphy
Ave., Sunnyvale (408) 774-1889 http://www.dishdash.net/ Why
They Won: Dish Dash safely falls under the category
of “Mediterranean,” but really their menu has a distinct
Middle Eastern feel. Some of the best lamb dishes from
Lebanon, Syria and Jordan fill the list of entrees,
including a dish that would have swept the Best Shish
Kebab category, had we included one. Other categories
Dish Dash could have won: Best Outdoor Patio Seating,
Best Baklava and Best Use of the Word Shakshuka on a
Menu. House Specialty: Definitely the kebabs
Acceptance Speech: “We’re happy to be honored
by our community. We’ve had a lot of support from our
regulars.” –Jillian Couture, Owner Bet You Didn’t

Through the study of music, they felt they would come
closer to understanding the nature of the cosmos.

BEST VEGETARIAN: BLUE
MANGO 4996 Stevens Creek Blvd., San
Jose (408) 248-7191 http://www.bluemangocusine.com/
Why They Won: Though the Blue Mango isn’t a
fully dedicated vegetarian restaurant, that didn’t
dissuade voters from selecting this Thai eatery as the
best place to devour delectable meat-free dishes. With
ambiance every bit as tasteful as the grub, the Blue
Mango proves that not all bean sprouts are created
equal. House Specialty: The Cha Cha Cha
Seabass (if you’re a seafood-friendly vegetarian); Kang
Keaw Wan (for vegans) – eggplant, bamboo and bell

3055 Olin Ave., San Jose (408) 423-8973 http://www.maggianos.com/ Why
They Won: Another national chain winner, Maggiano’s
may feel like a local joint, given that there’s only one
location in the Bay Area. With a menu full of
traditional but simple Italian dishes (“Spaghetti with
Meat Sauce,” for example), Maggiano’s is clearly a
favorite because it is safe, if not also delicious.
Their selection of beef cuts also rivals most full-time
steakhouses, and their appetizer list is as long as many
restaurants entire menus. House Specialty:
Family style dining, which allows groups to sample
more menu items in one sitting Acceptance
Speech: “We graciously accept and we’re very happy
to be a part of the Bay Area. We’ll keep trying to do
what we can to win next year. We love serving parties of

BEST BURGERS: PEGGY
SUE’S 29 N. San Pedro St. #100, San
Jose (408) 298-6750 http://www.peggysues.com/ Why
They Won: Downtown diner Peggy Sue’s received the
most votes for Best Burger… but they have so many
variations on their menu, we’re not sure which one is
the absolute winner. Could it be the Rocky Marciano
(with sliced olives and mozzarella)? Or the La Bamba
(with hot pepper cheese and grilled Hawaiian pineapple)?
Or perhaps it was Peggy Sue’s signature classic that was
the inspiration for the mountain of votes we received.
Whichever it was, as long as it’s ordered with a side of
onion rings and a root beer float, it’ll be just fine.
House Specialty: The Big Bopper Burger: THREE
quarter-pound patties with two slices of cheese, chili
and an egg for $6.99. Acceptance Speech:

Gourmet Delicatessen. When they aren’t catering for
upscale parties and events, the culinary geniuses at La

BEST AFTER HOURS/ LATE NIGHT: CARDINAL COFFEE SHOP &
LOUNGE 3197 Meridian Ave., San Jose
(408) 269-7891 http://www.cardinalcoffeeshop.com/
Why They Won: Readers overwhelmingly named
The Cardinal as their top pick for post-midnight nosh,
and it isn’t difficult to guess the reasons why: Late
night pot roast, devilish martinis, fat slices of
homemade pie, a 1950s atmosphere that avoids “theme
restaurant” cliché… shall we go on? Alright, we will:
Live music in the darkened lounge, the warm glow of a
deep fried Monte Cristo, free kids meals during sunlight
hours, the rich tradition of a family-owned
establishment… Alright, that’s enough. House
Specialty: Not to sound indecisive, but The Cardinal
features about 20 specials a day, all fresh.
Acceptance Speech: “I’m happy that all the
people out there who are half drunk and looking for a
late night spot to eat choose us and not the Jack in the

BEST COFFEE: LOS GATOS
ROASTING COMPANY 101 W. Main St., Los
Gatos (408) 354-3263 http://www.lgcrc.com/ Why
They Won: Long before the 1990s rise of Starbucks
and Peet’s coffee chains, Los Gatos Roasting Company was
perfecting the concept of the gourmet coffee
bar/hangout. LGRC opened in 1982, a good decade before
most people knew the difference between a latte and a
cappuccino. While franchised imitators are ubiquitous,
our astute readers prefer buying their joe from the
original. LGRC also sells hard-to-acquire beans from
around the world, an assortment of delicious treats (try
the chocolate-covered Kona beans), and gift baskets that
you can pick up for a friend… or keep to yourself.
House Specialty: Their in-store roaster.
There aren’t many coffee joints that roast their own
beans anymore. Acceptance Speech: “First of
all, we wouldn’t get the award if not for our great
customers. Our owner’s number one priority is customer
service, and it shows. We’re fast and efficient and we
produce quality at the same time. We have an incredible
crew of people working for us, too. ” –Scott Lisenbee,

preconceived notions about corporate kitchens. With
nearly 100 locations nationwide, they are clearly doing
something right… and that’s reflected by the margin of
their victory in our poll. P.F. Chang’s menu mixes
vegetarian, seafood and traditional dishes, from their

more inventive versions of Wok-Seared Lamb and “Chang’s
Lemon Scallops.” And if you try something you like, you

Circle, Santa Clara (408) 496-6777; 316 N. Santa Cruz
Ave., Los Gatos (408) 354-7570 http://www.pedrosrestaurants.com/
Why They Won: Pedro’s is a community favorite
because of atmosphere, as much as the food. Which is to
say that you can sip your giant margarita without
listening to waiters sing “Happy Birthday” every 30
seconds, enjoy chips on the table that didn’t come right
out of a plastic bag and order your meal without someone
asking if you “want a chalupa with that?” Pedro’s
selection of lunchtime enchiladas are popular with the
business crowd, and their more elaborate dinner items
beg to be enjoyed over a leisurely-paced meal.
House Specialty: Filet mignon fajitas
Acceptance Speech: “We’re very honored and we
thank our patrons for their consideration.” –Susan
Franklin, Manager Bet You Didn’t Know:

Jose (408) 248-5400; 2290 W. El Camino Real #9, Mountain
View (650) 968-7511 http://www.amber-india.com/
Why They Won: Both locations of Amber India
are so gorgeous, we could understand if voters were so
overwhelmed that they simply cast their ballots based on
beauty alone. Luckily, the menus at these superior
Indian restaurants trump all of the aesthetic
flourishes, like the fiber optic stars that light up the
Santana Row location’s ceiling at night. Both
vegetarians and carnivores will find ample temptations
on Amber India’s entrée lists (which vary slightly
between locations), and both will be pleased to see that
the food presentation matches the high standards set by
the interior design. House Specialty: Butter

BEST GERMAN*: TESKE’S
GERMANIA RESTAURANT 255 N. First St.,
San Jose (408) 292-0291 http://www.teskes-germania.com/
Why They Won: You know you’re in a good
German restaurant when even the New York steak and
French fries sound authentic (Rheinischer Zwiebelbraten
nach “Kölner Art” mit Bratkartoffeln und Gemüse). But
Teske’s victory in this category owes more to their food
than the language in which it is described. For example,
most Americans think a Weiner Schnitzel is just a hot
dog. Wrong! It’s a breaded veal cutlet, and until you’ve
wrapped your stomach around one (and a Bitburger
Pilsner), you don’t know what you’re missing.
House Specialty: During Oktoberfest, Teske’s
is open until 11:30pm. Acceptance Speech:
“Danke zu jeder, das für unsere Gaststätte wählte.

Tag. ”Translation: 'Thank you to everyone who voted for

excellence every day.' –Cindy Baumann, General Manager.

Santa Clara St., San Jose (408) 278-1400; 1087 S. De
Anza Blvd., Cupertino (408) 252-7262 http://www.britanniaarms.com/
Why They Won: Any place can put Guinness on
tap, fake a cockney accent and call themselves a pub.
But all three of the Britannia Arms pubs that share this
honor are overflowing with authenticity. Check out the
menu, with its warm steak and kidney pie, and bona fide
bangers and mash. Watch all the latest football games.
And we’re not talking NFL, but real football… soccer, if
you must. Join a darts tournament, sing an Irish lullaby
with the live band and sip Bass or Tennant’s while
thinking of the old country. God save the Queen… and
Britannia Arms. House Specialty: Authentic
Fish and Chips made only from real Icelandic Cod.

BEST JUICE BAR: BLENDZ 267 E. Campbell
Ave. #A, Campbell (408) 376-0555 http://www.blendz.com/ Why
They Won: We know what a lot of you are thinking:
“Best Juice Bar? How can you judge the best juice bar
when it’s just juice?” At least, we assume that’s what
you were thinking when several of you left this category
blank. Those that voted, however, are fully tuned in to
the seemingly endless fruit, vitamin and herb
combinations at Blendz. In addition to smoothies, Blendz
also has tossed-to-order salads and a host of healthy
snacks, even though we’re confident that these extras
didn’t unduly influence the juice votes. House
Specialty: Any drink with an added scoop of “Libido
Lifter” (which, in this case, is Yohimbe bark, Siberian
Ginseng or Saw Palmetto) Acceptance Speech:
“Wow. It’s definitely a huge honor. We’re excited that
our brand and product have extended throughout Silicon
Valley and we hope to continue the growth.” –Matt
Phipps, Owner Bet You Didn’t Know: Cranberry
juice was invented during a laboratory accident at NASA
in 1983. Okay, not really. Runner Up: Tom
& Dave’s Juice It, 81 W. Main St., Los Gatos (408)

Real, Redwood City (650) 482-2850; 361 California Dr.,
Burlingame (650) 579-1384 http://www.stacksrestaurant.com/
Why They Won: With a name like Stacks, you
might think that this place is all about the pancakes.
While it’s true that Stacks’ selection of flapjacks
(including the banana, macadamia nut and coconut
pancakes) are exquisite, to simply label Stacks’ as a
glorified IHOP is wildly shortsighted. Browsing their
selection of creative omelets and savory crepes, you
begin to sense that this is more than just another
breakfast diner. By the time you read through Stacks’
list of frittatas, skillets and “cheese melters,” you’ll
be downright surprised to find you haven’t even gotten
to the specials menu. Happy eating. House
Specialty: Picking just one is an outright joke, so
we’ll simply choose the semi-sweet “chocolate divine”
waffle (with whipped cream) and watch as Stacks’
regulars argue otherwise. Acceptance Speech:
“We’d like to thank everyone who voted for Stacks’
and we appreciate that we’ve been acknowledged for
offering the best service – everything from food to
atmosphere – that’s conducive to having a great
breakfast.” –Juan-Carlo Calvillo, Assistant Manager

first commercially available ready-mix food when she
released her signature pancake mix in 1889.

Why They Won: One thing is certain about
Prolific Oven: Their name is no exaggeration. Not only
did they turn out the vote, but they turn out dozens of
gorgeous cakes, cookies and pastries daily, each one
more sinfully extravagant than the next. There are
French-style cream cakes and mousses, American-style
classics (their chocolate-on-chocolate defies the boring
simplicity of its name) and specialty cheesecakes
aplenty. Most of their cakes are so downright gorgeous,
you hardly want to cut into them. House
Specialty: Hot chocolate at the espresso bar is made
by shaving three ounces of Nestle milk chocolate from a
five-pound bar into a glass of steamed milk. Perfection.
Acceptance Speech: “I’d like to thank the
people for nominating us and we’ll try to continue to
serve best cake in town.” –Henry Chan, General Manager

BEST PATIO DINING*: GORDON BIERSCH 33 E. San
Fernando St., San Jose (408) 294-6785 http://www.gordonbiersch.com/

Palo Alto (650) 323-1555 http://www.scottsseafoodsj.com/
Why They Won: To rule the business lunch
roost, you need more than just good food. First, you
need an establishment that is elegant, upscale and
refined enough to take clients, but without the elegant,
upscale and refined prices that will get your expense
account cut. Next, you need a waitstaff that can turn
over a table and get you back to the office… or have the
presence of mind to realize a big deal is underway and
let you sit with your coffee. Finally, you need the
restaurant to be flexible when it comes to having
someone else pick up the tab… and Scott’s takes Visa,
